A medical practice is a type of business consisting of at least one physician and office staff such as a receptionist, a billing clerk, a medical records clerk, and an office manager. While the physician is busy with patients, it is the office manager’s job to ensure that the business side of the practice is running smoothly. An office manager’s responsibility is to oversee the office operations such as financial management, patient communication, overseeing the office staff, medical records management, and scheduling. Gaining a job as an office manager is desirable yet difficult, but with the proper education and experience, it can be achieved. The position of medical office manager is considered prestigious, therefore competition for this position is quite high. In 2014, there were 333,000 medical and health service managers in the United States, of which 2,610 were in Alabama and 110 of them were in Tuscaloosa. One advantage is the higher salary that managers earn in comparison to most other staff members in an office. Another advantage is the prestige that is associated with a medical office manager’s title. Yet another advantage is that the experience gained while working as a manager in a medical office can be used in non-medical offices as well. One big disadvantage, however, is that managers spend longer hours at work but are rarely compensated for the overtime because they are salaries as opposed to hourly wages. Another disadvantage is that managers are responsible for disciplining and/or firing insubordinate employees, either of which action can be a stressful task. Yet another disadvantage is the fact that there are many candidates vying for the limited manager positions in the job market, making this career highly competitive.
