How To Write A Reflective Essay About My Social Work Experience

After two semesters working with Communities in Schools I have now learned how class knowledge turns into hands on experience. It has been one of the most exciting times of my Social Work career growing so much in such a short amount of time. This internship has given me a sense of what it is like to work with children, which has motivated me even more to continue with this population. I have definitely realized in what personal areas I have grown. At the end of last semester I felt like what I had learned in class was nothing compared to what I had been experiencing in the field. The field plan that we were required to complete the first part of the semester was very difficult for me. I could not seem to connect the activities and responsibilities I had in the field to the different practice behaviors. Now this is one of the easiest tasks because I have been there long enough to be able to point them out. I recognized that I was looking too hard into my work and my role at the internship just because the competencies were worded the way they were on the plan. For example, the “self- awareness and self-regulation to manage influence of personal biases” behavior sounds like it should be something big to me, but in reality it is as simple as keeping in mind that the client does not have the same resources available to them as one does. Another competency that I feared was indeed engaging in practice- informed research and research- informed practice. Now that the school year is coming to an end we began to pass out evaluation forms to the teachers of students we had on case load as well as to our clients which were the students.
