Personal Narrative: A Career As An Occupational Therapy

As a senior currently taking on two part time jobs, I decided that by taking on this internship, I could gain one on one experience through patient interaction in a healthcare environment. Interning at the Hebrew Home Rehabilitation Center can help me into my future career path as an occupational therapist. Although, I have not had the opportunity to job shadow an occupational therapist, through this internship I am hoping that I will be able to interact with many healthcare workers. Therefore, I can attain necessary skills as a competent health care advocate. Aside from wanting to gain the necessary amount of experience and skills I need to enter Grad school and become an occupational therapist, I am also working on my time management skills. From there, I hope to see how therapists give their advice to patients and show how their family members can offer support.
I assume that I would be completing general administrative tasks mainly, writing example reports, making telephone calls, providing wheelchair transportations, and maintaining notes throughout my time at the Hebrew Home. While doing this, it is essential to work on my communication and interpersonal skills with the residents of the Hebrew Home. Occupational therapists have to pay attention to what their patients tell them and have compassion and drive to help the residents improve their daily lives. It is also important to build a trusting relationship with the patient because it leads to better communication and interaction. This overalls contributes to a future career path in healthcare.
For some reason, if I do not like the career of an occupational therapist then I aspire to be informed and familiar with other health career opportunities in the healthcare
