Reflective Account In Social Work

When I started working as a CAN, as well as volunteering in the health care field, I understood that the work involved included helping residents in activities of daily living. What I found out after I started working was how much of an impact the job makes on people. When I was volunteering to help a woman go grocery shopping I did not think much of it. However, when I came into her home and started putting her groceries away she started tearing up. I found out that she and her husband used to always go grocery shopping together and would later play a game that involved putting the groceries away. She explained to me how this was the first time she was able to go to the store without breaking down. These types of impacts are why I want to

Define Critical Reflection, including its theoretical foundations Within the field of social work, the professionals have to recognize and evaluate their own personal values, thoughts and beliefs. A social worker must be able to recognize how their personal preferences may or may not affect their behaviors and decisions in their daily practice. For this reason, critical reflection is a very important concept to be knowledgeable of within the social work profession. It’s important to be cognizant of personal issues and also family-of-origin issues in one’s own clinical practice. When working with clients the social worker needs to have a clear understanding of their selves in order to fully help the client to the best of their abilities. If the social worker fails to identify limitations based off of family-of-origin issues or personal issues then according to Sheafor and Horejsi (2012), “The self-awareness one develops refers to an accurate perception of one’s own beliefs, values, attitudes and habits and how they might influence decisions and behavior in social work practice”(p. 427). If the social worker does not have a sense of self-awareness when it comes to personal issues then it can have negative effects on the clients and can hinder the…

This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…

I am a Student Paramedic with the East Of England Ambulance NHS Trust and this essay will look reflectively at an incident I attended during the course of my duties. The assignment will reflect on the moral, ethical and legal aspects of pre-hospital care that challenged me during this particular emergency. Reflective practice is a requirement of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC, 2014). Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper (2001) state, “we learn by doing and realising what came of what we did”.…

Volunteer work can be enriching and daunting experience, especially for those who have to adapt themselves to the situation. Through my interaction with individuals in a long-term care facility, I have gotten to look at things from a different perspective. As a Certified Nurse Assistant, you have a job to do which unfortunately only allows for one to show so much empathy, while still remaining professional. Being able to step back, and interact with individuals helps in developing a better transactional communication, as in, what we do with others. All while partaking in conversations working through both internal, and external noise we encounter in one’s interpersonal communication through shared environments.…

Families in an intensive care unit can be very challenging to manage while caring for a critically ill patient. Recently I had the pleasure of caring for a an elderly man whose bride of sixty years would not leave his bedside. She would utilize the call bell every ten minutes and had numerous questions at every encounter. She would come to the nurses station with questions and complaints and grab anyone walking in the hall with questions and issues. This woman would be hostile, rude and a challenge to manage with her problem behavior’s worsening and interfering with patient care as well as other patients care.…

    1. When reflecting upon my extern assignments I have two experiences that stand out. I started my first week with the volunteer service and I performed duties that relate to volunteer workers such as background checks and entering in the service hours. I was also able to do some work in employee health services, which pertain to making sure the employees are up to date on their flu shots, and other things such as fit testing. I was then placed in environmental services, and this is where I was able to view the daily operations that are involved in keeping the hospital environment safe and healthy, as well as learn the policies and codes that are involved in this department.…

As a social worker, I have never analyzed or interrogated my approach, even though I have always criticized society and its institutions, as my perceptions and world conceptions emerge from a country historically marked by violence, particularly for a long war, commanded by an armed group. This communist group started its combat due to social inequalities and social structures, inspired by socialism. Since then, Colombia has experienced a prolonged conflict, and social workers have been dealing with the effects. Therefore, my experience has been surrounded by imbalance, oppression, and marginalization.…

    • Before this course, I had never heard of the stages of change. The stages of change are very helpful for understanding where a client is at in terms of being ready for help or not. It will be helpful to use during field placements, especially with mandated clients. • I also learned a lot about engaging mandated/involuntary clients. When working in the field, I most likely will be working with mandated clients who do not want to be working with me.…

How have you grown personally and professionally from field this year (fall & spring)? Personally, I have grown by living in the here and now, enjoying the present moment. In the fall, I was more focused on getting to the end of my master’s career, but I understood the experience of learning, interacting with friends, and the “whole” school experience would not be obtained again. I search my soul to understand how to live in the “moment” while still planning for the future.…
