Multicultural Competency: Probing The Client

In this role play, the counselor did a great job probing the client for more information and details in order to develop a deeper understanding of what the client was saying and meant. Anytime the client was vague or even unclear,it allowed the counselor to seek a better understanding by simply asking questions such as “what exactly did you mean by your boss is only harshly demanding of you at work” or “could you tell me more about the situation”, in order for the counselor to gain clarification of what the client meant or was saying at the time. In this role play the counselor also did a good job demonstrating acceptance, maintaining eye contact and an upright posture, responding to the client with alertness and facial animation, and asking …show more content…
If the counselor was more aware of the clients culture it could have helped her understand how the client’s cultural values might affect her at work or how her attitude within the culture could affect the client at work as well. In this role the counselor should have demonstrated multicultural competency in order to be more helpful to the client. Imposing your own values and beliefs as a counselor can be harmful to the client and can even come off as judgmental which is not helpful and something you want to avoid as a counselor. Another helpful approach could have been if the counselor took a cognitive therapy approach. In an appropriate manner if the counselor challenged the clients misconceptions or negative thinking errors by pointing out positive alternative to dealing with her boss or the situation maybe the clients outlook would have changed or improved. Ultimately this technique could have been helpful in order to help the client distinguish and become aware of how her thoughts and feelings influenced her at work and can have a negative effect on her emotions on or about the
