At the first scenario, I played the counselor and my partner played the client. I learned a lot during the role play activity. Before that, I have no idea when I was in some complicated situations, and I don’t know where do I need to start because there are so many issues to deal with. After this activity, I realize that we cannot solve everything immediately. Firstly, we need to work together on little things,

When my classmate and I did the role-play activity, I made an assumption. I assumed that the client will use some means to bend me by saying that he will never show up for services. Personally, I would feel guilty and say I’m sorry in order to comfort my client even though that is not my fault. After discuss this assumption in class, I realize that I shouldn’t say sorry. I should tell the client that he can leave if he believes that is the best option for him. However, I suggested that he should continue because so far he has been showing progress toward the goal. I will also show my concern and care to him and let him know that I will not let him alone. After analyze the assumption, I concluded that I shouldn't feel guilty because the client doesn't want to come back, and I also need to learn more about communication skills.
During the role-play, I made a big mistake. At the beginning of the practice counseling session, I decided to touch my client in order to comfort him, and I did not even notice that how inappropriate of this action until my classmate reminded me. After that, I noticed that touching can easily make my client angrier and I have to avoid

It was proposed and coined by Lawrence Cohen and Marcus Felson in 1979 (Miller, 2006: 81). Cohen and Felson based their theory on a rational choice model, in which people make rational decisions in ways that will be to their advantage, with as little disadvantage as possible (Akers, 2004: 26). It is a subfield of criminology and rational choice. The development of this theory was in response to the surge of crime rate in the united between 1947 and 1974(Cohen, 1979: 588).…

Another way of understanding and explain marijuana use within skateboarding culture, would be through the routine activity theory that Johns used in her dissertation. Despite her not finding a higher amount of substance use among skateboarders than other subcultures, she did find an increased amount of substance use among the older informants in the 12th grade. As mentioned in earlier, this would match the findings of Demant & Järvinen, and the routine activity theory may therefore be able to find an explanation of why older adolescents are likely to engage in substance use more generally. This may be because older adolescents are more likely to be without parental supervision, or spend more of their time in an unstructured manner since they…

For the first time, my client began to cry. I had no idea how to handle this situation because I naturally am a reserved person and do not naturally show emotion. So, when my client began to cry, I was shocked for a second and tried to recover by saying “I see this is very upsetting for you.” At the time, I thought it was enough to just say that and then try to move on so the client would stop crying. After reviewing the role play, I wished I would have allowed more time for my client to release these emotions and maybe use silence as a way for the client to decide what she is comfortable with saying next.…

Role Play Reflection Before doing the video, I became somewhat anxious at the thought of being on camera; knowing that I was going to be evaluated did not help my anxiety at all. After all, I am an introvert; even at that I love listening to people talk about their life’s experiences, and love to help them resolve their issues whenever possible. This is one reason I am looking forward to learning more about the social work field. I have always been careful at how much advice I offer a person; even more so now, after this class, because I recognize that if a worker is not prepared to help in the proper way she can do more harm than good to all the parties involved in the process. I am also aware that I am a social work student, and that my…

When the client called, the counselor should have answered only to remind the client of the reasoning behind the suspension. If the client was in serious distress, the counselor should have responded appropriately in order to maintain trust and prevent the client from suffering…
