Experiential Activity II Scenario I: You Betrayed Me!
During the in-class activity, my classmate and I did the role play in two scenarios in order to practice how to communicate with our client and how to disarm their anger. At the first scenario, I played the counselor and my partner played the client. I learned a lot during the role play activity. Before that, I have no idea when I was in some complicated situations, and I don’t know where do I need to start because there are so many issues to deal with. When my classmate and I did the role-play activity, I made an assumption. I assumed that the client will use some means to bend me by saying that he will never show up for services. Personally, I would feel guilty and say I’m sorry in order to comfort my client even though that is not my fault. After discuss this assumption in class, I realize that I shouldn’t say sorry. I should tell the client that he can leave if he believes that is the best option for him. However, I suggested that he should continue because so far he has been showing progress toward the goal. I will also show my concern and care to him and let him know that I will not let him alone. After analyze the assumption, I concluded that I shouldn't feel guilty because the client doesn't want to come back, and I also need to learn more about communication skills.
During the role-play, I made a big mistake. At the beginning of the practice counseling session, I decided to touch my client in order to comfort him, and I did not even notice that how inappropriate of this action until my classmate reminded me. After that, I noticed that touching can easily make my client angrier and I have to avoid
