Mission is an essential part of an organization and may often be presented as a written statement (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). Information about what an organization does, their values and their goals for the future should be included in the mission and vision statements (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). A mission statement, as defined in the textbook Principles of Management, is “a statement of purpose describing who the company is and what it does” (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). A mission statement may be created for personal use, for a family, or for an organization (Covey, 1989). This mission statement must be understandable, relevant, and well communicated (Carpenter, Bauer, Erdogan, & Short, 2014). Employees must be able to understand the organizations mission to align their own goals and objectives with those of the organization and to help the company work toward their mission. A mission statement must be understandable to stakeholders (other than employees) as well. Stakeholders may want to know the reason for the organizations existence or what they are going to do to achieve their goals and objectives. Stakeholders may also want to know how the firm is committed to them. A mission statement that is relevant shows that the organization is in tune with the many different jobs employees have within the organization and how the world is changing outside the organization.
