Medical Assistants are responsible for scheduling a patient for appointment. A patient may call to schedule an appointment, so the medical assistant must collect information including name, address, date of birth, home and cell numbers. Sanderson (2017) states, “When a patient phones the offices for an appointment, the appointment can be scheduled in Office Hours before the patient information is entered in Medisoft. In these instances, it is possible to enter an appointment before a chart number has been assigned to the patient, by entering the patient’s name in the field right of the chart field” (p. 102). The patient may also be asked for the reason of the visit. The other information including social security number, ethnicity, race, and an emergency contact may be collected at the time of the visit to ensure privacy to the patient. The patient may not want to share that information of the phone and may feel vulnerable answering questions regarding race or ethnicity over the phone.
The medical assistant needs to verify the patient demographics at each visit to ensure that all the patient information in up to date.

The insurance can be verified by either calling the insurance company or electronically. Today, most insurance is verified electronically, this is both fast and effective is the medical office. Sanderson (2017) states, “Previously, to determine a patient’s eligibility and benefits, a staff member had to refer to the latest paperwork from the insurance company or phone a representative. Today, most eligibility verification is performed electronically. Electronic transactions are the most efficient because they take only seconds, and can be completed at the practice’s convenience” (p. 106). The copayment, referral, charge amount can be verified through Medisoft or online. Sometimes a reminder may pop up when entering the patient in for an appointment or opening the patient
