Marcus Brutus and Marc Anthony both gave superb speeches describing how they feel about Caesar’s death. Both gave good points, were persuasive, specific, and changed the plebeians mind set. First, I will explain Brutus’ speech in simple words. Next, also explain Antony’s in simple words. Then, Compare and contrast these two detailed and complex speeches. Lastly, explain why Brutus was a tragic hero. “Romans, countrymen, and lovers! hear me for my cause, and be silent, that you may hear: believe me for mine honor: and have respect to mine honor, that you may believe..” ( Act 3, Scene 2, Lines 14-17). Brutus starts out his speech by getting the plebeians attention and then explains why he killed Julius Caesar and asks the plebeians to respect his honor whether they respect it or not. “If then that friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: not that I loved Caesar, but that I loved Rome more..”( Act 3, Scene 2, Lines 21-23). Brutus was scared that Caesar was too ambitious and it would lead to him becoming a tyrant, Brutus made this assumption and Caesar wasn’t even officially emperor yet. Brutus goes on to say, “… If any, speak; for him have I offended. Who is here so rude that would not be a Roman? If any, speak; for him have I offended. Who is here so vile that will not love his country? If any, speak; for him have I offended. I pause for a reply.” (Act 3, Scene 2, Lines 31-35).
