Management By Walking Around Case Study

According to Robbins and Judge, managers that take time to walk around and network with the workforce of their company on a regular basis are practicing “management by walking around” or MBWA. Hewlett Packard is one successful company that uses this management practice. (Robbins & Judge, 2013) Many companies do not use this management practice due to the fact that it takes time away from the normal duties of management. Managers spend most of their time on analysis, coordination, and strategic planning. (Robbins & Judge, 2013) There are pros and cons to this type of management style.

A culture that allows the workforce to voice concerns and ideas without any consequence of disrespect or retaliation. This could include weekly short 15-minute huddles (meetings) in each department. During these huddles leaders could share new information with the workforce, and the workforce could share concerns and ideas. After this the leaders would take the information gathered to their meetings with the executives. The main thing to remember is that the staff must feel confident that their ideas and concerns will be taken seriously and not have to worry about retribution. It is however dependent on the culture that the company creates with its workers. There are many benefits that a manager or executive can gain by using this style of management. Such as individual worker’s moods, emotions, and decision-making abilities. (Robbins & Judge, 2013) It can also let the managers see how the departments function as groups. Managers have an important role as they analyze, coordinate, and plan for the company. (Robbins & Judge, 2013) However, I feel that a company that utilizes not only these management tools but also the walking around style of management will have a happier workforce that is more productive and cause employee moral to be
