Leadership Styles In The Criminal Justice System

In the criminal justice system, the behavior exhibited by the personnel is different from any other professional organization. The Supervisors of this profession need to be able to provide desired results and motivate individuals in their command. These goals require supervisors to implement a management style that works for the department. The main leadership styles are; autocratic, democratic, and laissez faire. The usage of each of these style has its advantages and disadvantages, but this is where good leadership is important to find out which style works for their environment.
Democratic Management Style In the democratic style a supervisor delegates authority to their personnel by giving them the responsibility to carry out a specified assignment. In this concept personnel complete their assignments in their own ensuring that they make their deadline. The staff are are involved in decision making process that promotes collaboration and motivation (Daft, 2008). This type on style can seen in many democratic nations or in the collaboration of nations such as Parliament in England, Congress and The Senate in the United States, or the United Nations. In this concept there is minimal association from the supervisor except to mentor. The advantages of management style include personal responsibility, increase motivation and morale among staff members. The disadvantage to this approach is if the supervisor is unable to provide staff with adequate guidance could result in confusion, lack of defined roles and missed deadlines (Daft, 2008). An example of this style would be: Ghandi. He encouraged peaceful protest for his cause, but he did not direct the group in how to conduct their activities.
