The Importance Of Task Oriented Leadership

In my opinion, I do believe that a leader can maintain a personal friendship with some members of his or her work group without creating the perception of in-groups and out-groups depending on the situation. Even though “leaders tend to give members of their in-group more favorable performance ratings than they give to out-group members (5-6)”, there are situations in which a leader knows they must adapt their style in order to maintain their position in a professional setting. This leadership style is called contingency leadership and its goal is find a balance between task oriented leaders and relationship oriented leaders. There is no question that a leader is going to trust someone who he or she has worked with over an extended period of time over a new hire. But it is up to the leader to empower that new hire in order to complete the task at hand and thus form a good relationship for the benefit of the organization. In order to do this and combat the perception of an in-group bias the leader must be decisive, fair, and strategic. At my own workplace, I apply this same concept because there are a few members within my workplace that I trust more than others. It is not the fact that I like them more, it is the fact that they treated me as an equal when I was first hired. Small bickering is a weekly occurrence at my workplace and in order to combat my own bias I access the situation and keep the idea of friendship out of the equation. I then strategically think what is going to effect my companies bottom line which results in a fair conclusion of the situation. At the end of the day the conflict is resolved and I am still close with certain people within my organization but I can still be objective depending on the situation and in-groups and out-groups are not a …show more content…
The one that I use most often in my workplace is leading by example and respect. When it comes to work, I have to lead by example because I work for a family business. My uncle holds me to a higher standard then most of the workers and I have a greater amount of responsibility. I show up at 6:30 AM to open a branch and I help him close at 5:30 PM because he knows that he can trust me. I think that this goes along with my objective of possibly taking over a branch when he retires. I feel as if the other employees at work respect my work ethic and would be happy if I was their boss someday. In order to gain their respect, I lead by example by either helping unload the heavy building materials, or dealing with a challenging customer. This tactic is appropriate and effective because I have gradually gained more responsibilities over the years. I started in the warehouse stacking boxes of nails and I am now part of the sales and purchasing staff due to my knowledge.
