In the military there are three core leadership competencies they are to lead, develop, and achieve. They are all supported by behaviors. They are all important and must be ingrained into a leader in order to become a successful competent leader. To lead is the most important attribute of the core leader competencies, because it allows leaders to later be able to develop and achieve as well. The behaviors that support leading are to lead others, extend influence beyond the chain of command, lead by example, and communicate. To lead others is to “motivate, inspire, and influence others to take initiative, work towards a common purpose, accomplish critical tasks, and achieve organizational objectives.” (United States, 2006) To extend influence …show more content…
SSG Johnson and his squad are tasked with conducting the Engineer Qualification Tables (EQT) at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. While SSG Johnson believes he leads others well, he fails to realize that by not giving his soldiers the purpose and clear intent of the commander, his soldiers are unaware of their actual purpose. Also he only cares about the mission, and fails to take the welfare of his soldiers into account. If SSG Johnson would provide a clear and concise purpose, as well as the commander’s intent, the Soldiers in SSG Johnsons squad would gain the knowledge of why they are doing what they are doing and would better be able to complete the mission. Also it is imperative that SSG Johnson take into account the welfare of his soldiers. By not doing so he is undermining his own authority and will lose the trust and respect of his soldiers. Overall, SSG Johnson is able to extend influence beyond the chain of command, however in this scenario he is not working with anyone outside of the chain of command. With that being said if the opportunity arose, he would have been able to establish and maintain a good working relationship with the
