Introduction Ones’ leadership platform is a foundation of components that make up the roadmap “to success” based on what is important to them. It is important to have an understanding of the different leadership styles and leadership theories, in order to develop the leadership platform. It is also important to note that there “are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are people who have tried to define it” (Northouse, 2013, p. 2). As we progress in knowledge, technology, and growth as a society, so do the leadership styles and theories. As stated by Northhouse (2013), “Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (p.5) The purpose of this paper is to …show more content…
It is a roadmap of how they intend to lead and to be lead. Leaders have to be willing to do what they expect others to do. The social change model of leadership development is a good way to incorporate individual, group, and society values. The values within this model include change, consciousness, congruence, commitment, collaboration, common purpose, controversy with civility, and citizenship (Komives, 2011, p.360). We are all trying to accomplish the same goal, but often times, leaders, and followers come about it from a different approach. It is the responsibility of the leader to set a clear vision. As stated by Sergiovanni, (1990, May), “In transformative leadership, by contrast leaders and followers are united in pursuit of higher-level goals common to both” …show more content…
A good leader will be able to create visions that are measurable and attainable. In order to do this one must understand the institutional climate. They must understand the population of students served and the strengths of those who serve the students. As stated by Sergiovanni, (1992), “Leadership mindscapes are shaped by what we believe and value and by our understanding of the world” (p.41). A leader of one area such as student services must collaborate with other leaders from academic affairs to create a cohesive climate. McIntyre, (1981), Flores (1988), and Noddings, (1984) stated the

A leader, the person who leads or commands a group. That's the Merriam-Webster definition, but that seems far too simple a definition for a character who's actions and influences can reverberate for days, weeks or even generations to come. Often the word leader calls to mind a vision of Martin Luther King Jr., a military officer, or the President of the United States? A leader, in my opinion, is someone who leads a group with integrity, and with a passion to serve others. Leaders need to have values and character straits admirable to others.…

While scholarship and dedication to learning are important to one’s success, incorporating values of leadership and service are integral to a well-rounded and nuanced education. Not only must a scholar have a substantial knowledge of the world around them, but they must know how to use this knowledge for good and how to impart it to others. A community can not sustain itself with knowledge alone. There must exist some concept of a greater good for a group to truly thrive. This mix of academic scholarship and a strong feeling of public responsibility, as well as a richness of character, makes a true leader and a worthy role model.…

Leadership is something I know I posses but as I wrote this essay I found it very difficult to write about myself, I am not a person to brag about personal accomplishments so this was a challenge. I was a leader in several activities, but looking back, I found even though I wasn’t in a leadership position I led by action. In church on mission trips I realized the younger kids look up to me for guidance on how to do things or talk to people. In everyday life, my sister and her friends look up to me for leadership in school work and social events, and in Ducks Unlimited the mentees in the junior mentor program saw that I had shifted, over the years, from mentee to mentor and that they could also continue their journey in Ducks Unlimited in this…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Leadership Kathy Dunlap Bethel University MOD 310 April 24, 2017 Kameke Payne Leadership No one theory of leadership has ever been accepted by all, but the common thought of leadership is that it is an influence process, occurs within a group, involves goals, and attainment. Some people think leaders are born with a trait that innately makes them leaders, while others theorize that it is a characteristic of an individual, but we have learned that leaders are a product of their development and life experiences. Leaders are concerned with understanding people’s beliefs and gaining their commitment. They function without focusing on the opinions of others, which allows them to think of new ideas and motivate others to develop these…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

Transformational leadership theory is defined as the process of how a person’s interaction with others affects the ability to create a bonding relationship that results in a mutual trust and motivates both the leader and the followers naturally and as duty demands (Joseph & Huber, 2015). The essence of transformational theories is the leader’s sense of responsibility in transforming the members through their inspirational and enigmatic personality, with the aim of leading them successor to achieve a common goal (Grossman & Valiga, 2012). As indicated by Grossman and Valiga (2012), transformational leaders not only have a vision and inspire but also creates an element of empowerment of caring for people and ensuring followers success by encouraging, convincing and renewing their faith and enthusiasm about their goals and vision. One of the best qualities of a transformational leader is ensuring that all members of the group move together in achieving success. My aspirations as a transformational leader are to instill in my students an enthusiasm, motivation, and vision with purpose and the can-do attitude of reaching success in anything that you put your mind to because failure is not an option (Stanley, 2011).…
