Leadership is about the actions you take in a role you embrace” (Kouzes and Posner, 2014, p. 266). Throughout the semester, we learned that leadership is not about positions or authorities. Leadership can emerge from anywhere anytime if the person has the character to attract and inspire others. Leadership is also not an inborn trait. It can be trained and practiced. The continuous practice to improve leadership can produce a better leader.
Values, civility and integrity are the key components to a good leadership. The articulation of clear values is very important in that allows followers to correlate their values with leader. For instance, Leaders who value diversity will attract people who value the same. Shared values have the ability to harmonize relationships between leaders and followers. The harmonization creates the atmosphere of safety that allows the followers to feel secured and motivated to work together with the leader. Thus, the clear articulation of values help create a better leader. Moreover, leaders should work based on civility with respect and courtesy towards others. Leadership is not about dictatorship. Leadership is about bringing people together to create a unity. For the sake of bringing people together, leaders need civility that is to listen to others and respect different types of opinions regardless of what they think. Civility helps the followers to feel worthy in relationships with the leader. Lastly, integrity contributes highly on raising the quality of leadership. Integrity is how we behave what we say. Integrity is one of the ways to earn credibility. Once integrity is recognized in relationships, people are more likely to listen and contract for the unknown future with the person. Therefore, integrity is an important foundation of leadership. In contrast, the absence of civility from academia or in business have severe consequences in relationships with others. Incivility in either academia or business lead to the loss of trust and respects from others resulting in the isolation of the person from community. All our group members were very proactive in communicating and working together for this project. One member created a format for the slides; a member kindly encouraged everyone to review the presentation rubric again; a member asked for a meeting before the presentation; a member reminded to wear professional attire for the presentations. However, there is one thing that we could have presented better in class if we conducted a rehearsal in advance, each of our group member prepared and presented relatively well by collaborating and dividing tasks equally to all. It seems to me that the shared value toward this project helped the g the. We had the same goals toward the project to get full points in this presentation. Therefore, each group member took this assignment seriously. Overall, I learned the importance of values, civility and integrity within a group. Therefore, I will continue to articulate my values, and develop civility and integrity in order to improve my leadership skills. Furthermore, I discovered my value for face-to-face communication from this experience as my group mostly had text communication. I value face-to-face communication, because it helps all the group members to actually feel the tone of voices and facial expression that I believe will enhance the quality of communication more than online communication. Therefore, I will more actively engage in the group and encourage the group to have face-to-face meeting in the future group
