Leadership: “Leadership is the ability to guide others without force into a direction or decision that leaves them still feeling empowered and accomplished.” In this recent Tedx Talk, Simon introduced us to what leadership is and how it is implied into others everyday lives. His leadership and management ideas also relate to concepts located in our text.
In our world, when we feel safe amongst our own, our natural reaction is to trust and to cooperate. In the text, the definition of engaged employee’s states, “a strong emotional bond to his or her organization and is committed to its objectives.” This also ties into the Tedx Talk in multiple ways. Many people have the label “authority,” but never show the qualifications as a leader. Many leaders show the qualifications but do not have any authority. Sacrifice for others gives the environment the opportunity to see how one person can make a difference and if we all sacrificed for others, how safe we would feel. Simon opened the Tedx Talk with a very touching story about a gentleman in the military who has showed great leadership to his people and country. At war, some of his men got injured and being the brave leader he was, he carried each man that he could to safety. One soldier asked him, “Why did you do this” and he responded with, “Because you would have done it for me” then proceeded to kiss the man’s forehead and continue saving others. This story left me speechless. This man took his job more than just a job. While he was working, he saved lives in more than one way. He physically saved them, but just by hearing what he told that soldier he was doing way more to impact peoples’ lives. He was committed to his work and to his people which resulted in a successful bond with his team. An engineering company called Barry-Wehmiller was hit by the recession losing thirty percent of their orders over night. They needed to save ten million dollars to get back to where they were. The board joined together to discuss options for the company as well as layoffs. In the video, it said that they believed in heart counts, not head counts. After discussing, they decided to do something out of the ordinary. They decided every employee from secretary to CEO was required to take four weeks of unpaid vacation. The owner said, “It is better that we should all suffer a little, then any of us should have to suffer a lot.” They could take their vacation at any time and it did not have to be taken consecutively. Flextime was another term used in our text. Flextime is a system of working a set number of hours with the starting and finishing times chosen within agreed limits by the employee. This ties in with this scenario seeing the employee told them they have four weeks of unpaid vacation and they are able to take it whenever they please. After that moral went up and the company ended up saving twenty million dollars. After feeling safe and trusting their company, employees started trading time with each other. When someone had four weeks of vacation and another employee had none, the employee with four weeks gave the other employee some of their time. People started realizing if they did not need time off and someone
