What It Takes To Be A Leader Essay

I can still remember the day when my parents told me the phrase, “You are a leader, not a follower.” It was in kindergarden right after I told them about a few girls who were making fun of a friend of fine, and I decided to stop them and defend her. When my parents told me that phrase, it definitely stuck with me throughout my life. I think that’s a phase most kids hear time to time in their childhood. It’s that phrase that makes you question, what it a leader? What does it takes to be a leader? How can I become a leader? It’s a phrase we are faced with every day. Do I standup for what I believe in? Or do I do what everyone else is doing? I’d like to think I’ve lived the past 20 years as a leader, and I plan to live the rest of my life a leader as well. In the dictionary the definition of a leader is the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. But in my option that definition does not do this word justice. A leader is someone who leads by example. Someone confident without seeming cocky. Someone in charge without seeming pushy or bossy. Someone who is knowledgeable, but humble. Someone who knows how to communicate and listen without taking over a conversation. Someone who brings out the best in others. The point of a leader is not to be in command and to have followers. The point of being a leader is to motivate others, to encourage them and inspire others to be positive leaders as well. Throughout my life I’ve had leadership roles in extracurricular activities and in the classroom. Each experience has taught me a new characteristic that applies for becoming a leader in every day experiences. From the smallest details to impacting lessons, I’ve taken a valuable point from my leadership roles especially in the times of High School and the Honors program in Miami Dade
