Leadership In any organization, from the most primitive hunting party to the most complex multinational corporation, leadership is crucial. Leadership can be represented by a single person, it can be spread out over a structured network, or it can be diffuse. In this paper, the concept of leadership in organizational management will be discussed. This discussion will include an analysis of what leadership means, what responsibilities it entails, and what is required of business leaders. In addition, contemporary perspectives on leadership will be examined, including thoughts on leadership from the business elite. Finally, the paper will conclude with an examination of the concept of Emotional Intelligence, how it relates to leadership, and why it is such an important attribute of leaders in the 21st century. Not everyone agrees on what it means to be a leader. For example, a debate exists between trait leadership and process leadership. Sometimes, people think that a person is a born leader. This perspective argues that certain people are special and have innate qualities or natural characteristics which separate them from others (Northouse, 2015). From the trait perspective, leaders are in their positions by natural right, or because they are somehow better or more skilled than those they lead. On the other side of the debate is process leadership. Those who argue this side say that leadership is something which can be learned. Instead of being an inherent trait, “leadership is a phenomenon that resides in the context of the interactions between leaders and followers and makes leadership available to everyone” (Northouse, 2015). Common sense and experience with corporate organizations in the modern US suggest that those who argue for process leadership are closer to being
