I define leadership as the ability to influence others to accomplish commonly agreed upon goals. I have held several leadership roles throughout my academic career, but rarely analyzed my strengths and weaknesses. Through Dr. Courtright’s course “Leadership in Organizations,” I became aware of mistakes I have made while leading and may continue building a quality leadership methodology. In this essay, I will identify my key leadership strengths and weaknesses. I will also divulge my plans for improving my weaknesses before describing the leader I want to become. While leading one of our group projects, the key strength my group members expressed was my ability to communicate openly and honestly. I also listened fully and considered what …show more content…
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie is one book I am interested in. My plan for practicing approachability and emotional intelligence involves meeting people in public places. I understand many people meet strangers without hesitation, but my introverted personality makes me uncomfortable in some social settings. The informal atmosphere and non-outcome dependence of public places will prepare me for formal social events. In addition to communicating openly, another key strength my group members commented on was my task …show more content…
Furthermore, if I delegate most tasks, my role would be to provide advice and answer task related questions people might have. Although I desire control and order, I am able to cope with disorder and setbacks through a high ability to learn. My ability to learn from others and my own mistakes improves my ability to lead effectively. Therefore, other ideas for overcoming my weaknesses include reading self-help books, history books, and biographies for advice. According to my group members, I should seek advice on tackling indecisiveness. After all, my group project was not the first time I have faced indecision. During my executive leadership role in the Corps of Cadets, there were many times I deferred, or did not make any decision. My thoughts on confronting indecision are to set deadlines and obtain as much information as possible for making a decision. Lastly, I intend to acquire experience by always making a decision. After deciding, I will constantly seek feedback from my group members. While it is true all leaders have strengths and weaknesses, there are leaders who have wielded their strengths and worked through their weaknesses to become an ideal

Leaders have to make ethical decisions based on the resources that they have available. If the leader is still uncomfortable with the decision they have made, the leader should ask their colleagues and use their collective knowledge and experience to make a more considered decision. (Swinton, 2007, p. 1) There are times when a leader must listen to their instincts to come up with a decision. Once the decision has been made the leader must stand behind that decision even if it isn’t the right one and accept responsibility for it being inadequate. When making a decision a leader must take those choices seriously.…

“Key Qualities of Leadership” Individuals involved within leadership roles can “make or break” a company. Without key qualities of leadership, an individual cannot fully provide their customers or its employees with the experiences they deserve. Without proper skills and reinforcement, leaders cannot foster a positive workforce or support their employees. Without certain key factors a leader or manager becomes just another employee, and not the leader they are required to be. Having leaders with the skills such as honesty, accountability, the ability to inspire and to delegate, and basic communication skills are all necessary parts to becoming proven and respectable leaders within a business.…

Leadership is so crucial to success, that any group cannot function without some sort of leader. Leadership Kathy Dunlap Bethel University MOD 310 April 24, 2017 Kameke Payne Leadership No one theory of leadership has ever been accepted by all, but the common thought of leadership is that it is an influence process, occurs within a group, involves goals, and attainment. Some people think leaders are born with a trait that innately makes them leaders, while others theorize that it is a characteristic of an individual, but we have learned that leaders are a product of their development and life experiences. Leaders are concerned with understanding people’s beliefs and gaining their commitment. They function without focusing on the opinions of others, which allows them to think of new ideas and motivate others to develop these…

Feelings of confidence and pride can come from being a decision maker, but with that also comes feelings of having to be perfect. Having been taught to be an independent decision maker, it can feel as if I shouldn’t have to ask for advice or help. “I have made plenty of decisions before on my own, why should I have to bother someone else about this choice?” has been a thought that has ran through my head about having to make a decision. I know this isn’t correct, and I have learned to ask for help at school about work and projects I do not understand, but where it is hard is having to swallow my pride on the personal issues and choices. Sometimes I can’t do it alone.…

One of the most challenging things at being a great leader has been the ability to adapt to our worlds ever changing culture and traditions, preserving what is essential and what are outdated ideas. (Heifetz, 2009) To me this has been ever so evident during the past year, learning what once worked with one group of Soldiers no longer fit my new platoon. When I first joined the Army, I learned you don’t ask questions, you listen and execute. Learning from past experiences I executed the same mindset which didn’t result the same effects as previously.…
