Video games and juvenile delinquency
Over the years, there has been a sharp increase in juvenile delinquency witnessed across all parts of the world, especially in first world nations. These crimes mostly involve the use of guns and aggressiveness. This has prompted research into the possible causes of these events, with various studies suggesting that there may be an association between media violence, particularly video games, and juvenile violent behavior. This paper will focus on finding this relation based on research.
Research by Cunningham, Engelstatter, and Ward (2011) based on the sales of video games reveal that the higher the number of video games are sold, the lesser the number of crimes. In addition, they reveal that violence is seasonal, as is the sale of video games for use during holidays. Based on their findings, they speculated that video games play the essential role of keeping the adolescents busy and off the streets, hence avoiding trouble, as well as providing an outlet for violent urges. This is because they are more susceptible to the injurious effects of violent video games, and multiple risk variables such as peer deliquency, prior victimization, alienation and sensation seeking (Custers, Exelmans, & Bulck, 2015). They therefore, come to a conclusion that video games may be detrimental to the social life of teenagers and adolescents due to putting them at risk of aggressive behavior and various risk factors. Parents are also adviced to look out for antisocial behaviors as well as personality traits that may result to violence, and regulate their children’s access and frequency to video
