In today’s show, we’ll uncover how external negative influences have caused teenagers to constantly be apprehensive of their appearance to others. Due to the technology, media and literature we have today, it is easier and easier for teenagers to access the unrealistic expectations set by contemporary society and the media.
Recently, many “body challenges” have surfaced, using social media as a platform. Some of these claim to be inspiring and motivational, when in fact, they are helping to increase teenager’s insecurities. Mission Australia’s 2015 National Youth survey, concluded that 37.4% of females surveyed in Australia, indicated that body image was one of their major concerns. Challenges such as the “Don’t Judge Challenge”, “Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge” and more recently, the “A4 waist challenge”. In 2014, Dove released a video as a part of their self-esteem campaign that shows the process of a magazine shoot, with the final product being vastly different to the actual woman. The Self-Esteem Campaign promotes all aspects of beauty with a lot videos focusing on this topic. Beauty Redefined, a website aspiring to educate young girls and women on the importance of self-worth and body-image, comments that “Digitally slimming women’s bodies, adding or exaggerating a “thigh gap,” and removing signs of life like pores, gray hairs, and wrinkles aren’t just casual decisions based on aesthetic preferences of a few editors — they are profit-driven decisions to create false ideals for females to seek after in hopes of someday attaining.
