There are three main reasons why animal experimentation is done on animals and not on human beings. The first reason of which is for safety trials as because in many countries it’s a legal requirement that all drugs and vaccines are tested on animals to ensure they are safe to use on human beings. An example of such a requirement is in the UK where an act called the Medicines Act of 1968 which states that all new pharmaceutical products has to be tested on at least two different species of live mammal one which has to be a large non-rodent.
The second reason for testing on animals is effectiveness trials which are experimenting on animals to see for their effectiveness. Animals can be used as a substitute to see whether a vaccine is effective or not. This can also be used to test for usefulness of current AIDS drugs in preventing HIV infection. Major questions do arise over whether it’s any more ethical to give a monkey HIV than a human when it too may become sick with AIDS and die. However, a problem with using a short tailed monkey also known as macaques in vaccine research is that they have different immune systems to humans. This therefore means that they cannot be infected with HIV but can be infected of combinations of other ones.
The final reason why animals are tested on is for general research which can help to gain a better understanding of a
