According to the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, “Every person in the United States has benefited from the results of animal testing. Children are now immunized against many diseases such as whooping cough, small pox, and tetanus all because of animal testing”. With all the good coming from animal testing it is hard to believe there are still some radical groups strongly opposing the medical science behind it. Animal testing for medical purposes is necessary and justified because it is vital to modern medical treatments and will continue to be necessary to respond to new diseases.
Some of the groups opposing animal testing are the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and People for Ethical Treatments of Animals (PETA). These organizations have caused over 100 million dollars in property damage and data loss. From 1895 through the late 1990’s ELF has conducted hundreds raids in order to “liberate animals” during those raids they would destroy files and burn down laboratories

Half of the information on treatments for cancer is provided through results from animal testing. Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy were the only ways to combat cancer until recently. Through testing on lab rats, we are close to discovering a way to kill the cancerous cells directly. According to the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, “This year, approximately 182,800 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and approximately 40,800 women will die from breast cancer.” Herceptin and Tamoxifen, which was tested on rats, are two new developmental drugs that have already saved thousands of men and women with breast cancer. “Alec Baldwin, who serves on the advisory board of the Fund and received PETA’s Humanitarian Award in 2005, has broken with PETA over the value of animal research in developing treatments for breast cancer.” (Animal Research

In the past century, advances in technology and scientific discoveries have given rise to what is known to us as modern medicine. Although,we should appreciate the extensive knowledge that we have gained today. It is also very important to understand the methods/experiments that have led to these discoveries. This is very similar to ordering a dish at the restaurant without asking what ingredients were used in making it. Unfortunately, in light of these discoveries many animals are being used in research testing and toxicity testing.…

Most supporters of animal testing advocate its use because they believe that it provides promising medical information. Another prominent argument given by supporters, is that although animal testing is a cruel process, it is a necessary evil. In other words, it is too great of a risk to test tube something alone and then give it consecutively to human beings (Collier). Animal testing is justified because we need it to ensure the safety of humans. The third major point that is used in favor of testing is that the process of examination is well regulated, with laws ensuring the protection of animals.…

The term "animal testing" refers to procedures performed on living animals for purposes of research into basic biology and diseases, assessing the effectiveness of new medicinal products, and testing the human health and/or environmental safety of consumer and industry products such as cosmetics, household cleaners, and food additives. All of the chemicals and everything that scientists use on these animals have a chance of hurting these animals mentally and physically, and it can cause suffering and distress. Sadly, most of the animals used for animal testing are killed after all of the experiments, but there are some that go through more testing if the first test that they go through does not affect them in any way. There is a lot of ways that scientists test these animals, some include forced chemical exposure in toxicity testing.…

Animal testing is the experimentation on non-human animals. Its purpose is to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system that is being studied. Animals have been used for biomedical research for thousands of years, dating all the way back to 384 BC by Greek physician-scientists such as Aristotle and Erasistratus. Early scientists such as these conducted animal tests in order to advance their understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology (Hajar 1).…

Experiments are conducted on these animals to determine whether or not new products might cause skin and/or eye irritation. Animals that are allegedly protected underneath the Animal Welfare Act do not have the protection that the law has promised, but yet they should. The federal government should enforce and develop stricter laws regarding animal testing within the cosmetic manufacturing industry which would decrease the number of animals that would suffer in the US.…
