6.) Were these experiments conducted at constant pressure or constant volume? Justify your answer in terms of the experimental conditions used in the lab.
The lab was conducted at constant pressure as the room that the lab was in was at constant pressure and the Styrofoam calorimeter was basically the same.
7.) Is it appropriate to equate the heat measured in this lab with the enthalpy or the energy associated with the chemical processes studied? Briefly explain your answer.
There was 4 objectives for this lab which where to …show more content…
Replace the lid and place the temperature probe into the calorimeter, making sure that the tip is submerged in the water. Record the temperature of the HCl(aq) within the cups; this will be your Tinitial. Weigh out ~ 1 gram of solid NaOH and record the mass to the nearest 0.01 g. Since sodium hydroxide readily picks up moisture from the air, it is necessary to weigh it and proceed to the next step without delay. Raise the lid and quickly add all the NaOH using a glass stirring rod as needed to push the pellets into the HCl. Allow the stir bar to mix the solution for five minutes or until the temperature has maximized and begins to drop. Record the maximum temperature reached by the solution (this will be your Tfinal). Dispose of the solution in the waste receptacle. Rinse and dry the thermometer, Styrofoam cup, stir bar and stirring
