The first step is to put on your goggles and apron. Then you need to gather your materials. You then need to make observation of the hydrate. Observe the color, state, texture, etc. to smell the unknown substance you need to waft the substance by slowly moving the smell of the liquid to your nose. Step 2- For the lab my group changed the way we were doing the experiment for time. This is the first way that we did it for trails one to two. First you need to get a beaker and mass it on a scale. Then zero it on the scale and mass about 3 grams of the hydrate. Record the data for the beaker and hydrate. Turn on the burner and but a test tube holder on the test tube. Then heat the test tube over the burner back and forth and make sure it is not pointing at anyone. Warm the beaker and observe the color. Let the test tube cool down. Get the hydrate out into the beaker and mass it. Do this a couple times and record the data. …show more content…

It is indicated throughout the information in the original information stated at the beginning of the lab that there are only 2 options for what a hydrate’s chemical equation will indicate. Either acidic vapors are released or not. In testing the 4 other vapors, it was discovered that 1 releases acidic vapors almost instantly, 2 took a second heating before the acid could be picked up by the litmus paper, and the final 1 had no release of acid at all. Like the first portion of the procedure, there is room for error. The observations taken throughout the lab showed that each hydrate had a different reaction to being heated which altered its appearance in a particular way.…
