Bay Water Experiment

Improved Essays
The experiment came out successful based on the results. We did encounter one problem with one of the solutions. The colorimeter results for Biscayne Bay Pond Water didn’t come out right; so we had to dilute the solution to get the result.

Analysis:
First turn on the colorimeter and select “ALL TESTS” from the testing menu. Press “AMMONIA-N H” from the menu. Fill one tube with 10 ml of DI water, and three tubes with 10 ml of bay water, pond water, and parking lot puddle water. We added a certain amount “Ammonia Nitrogen Reagent #1” and “Ammonia Nitrogen Reagent #2” that were stated in the procedures. These two substance were only for the three samples of water. We waited 5 minutes for color development and used the colorimeter to get the

With this experiment intend to prove Salem Lakes ability to buffer chemicals used in the water treatment process versus that of the Yadkin River. Using a jar test machine, simulated the addition of an acid in the form of Al2SO4, and a base NaOH to the coagulation process. Salem Lake does show a preferred buffering at higher acid doses, though Yadkin River is more efficient at the low to mid-range dose. INTRODUCTION There is a distinct difference in the buffering capacity of Salem Lake versus Yadkin River.…

The purpose of the stream table investigation was to investigate the variables that influence erosion rates in a stream. Sediments that were eroded at or near Linganore High School end up in the Chesapeake Bay. Sediments eroded from rocks in Linganore Creek and are carried to the Monocacy River. From there, the sediments are taken to the Potomac River. The Potomac River’s water and anything loose in it are dispensed into the Chesapeake Bay.…

This experiment was designed to test what the limiting nutrient was in Loughberry Lake, as well as examine the trophic state of the lake. In order to find out what the limiting nutrient was, we performed a few different tests. We began with a secchi disk test to see the transparency of the water. Then, we took water samples that we later used to test the turbidity levels of the water after adding varying amounts of phosphorous and nitrogen.…

Three different areas of the Toomuc creek were chosen based on the judgment that they would represent the whole creek. From each area, a sample of water from upstream and downstream was taken from varying depths – the surface, middle and bottom. Prior to utilizing any equipment, it was washed with distilled water to rid the contaminants that may have been present. The labelled sample jar was then attached to the sampling pole and was immersed into the creek and was taken out when the jar was full. The thermometer was immediately used to measure the temperature and a pH indicator strip was inserted for five seconds and then removed.…

Scientific Validity of “Study links altered brain chemistry, behavioral impairments in fish exposed to elevated CO2” Coral reefs are having a problem with pH levels and they are dying some places around the world right now, because of it. This is not only affecting the coral reefs, but the animals that live in them and survive with them. There is a Scientific Study called “Study links altered brain chemistry, behavioral impairments in fish exposed to elevated CO2” which discusses the behavior and neurological impairments of coral reef fish due to more CO2 and acidic levels of pH. More CO2 causes lower levels of pH and makes it more acidic and very dangerous for fish. Overall this is a poor scientific article, because it has only one good source…

When speaking with marine biologist Jenelle Whitemend, I learned about several human impacts negatively affecting the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. The most prevalent impacts include urban runoff, agriculture, and pollution (from boating and the atmosphere). While on the pier I noticed several individuals boating off in the distance. The motor on Speedboats contribute to pollution since they expel gasses into the atmosphere. Jenelle Whitemend also enlightened me on how human impacts are directly affecting the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.…
