Most teens with depression will suffer from more than one episode. 20 to 40 percent will have more than one episode within two years, and 70 percent will have more than one episode before adulthood. Episodes of teen depression generally last about 8 months. Often times, it is thought that teens use and commercialize drugs to fit in with their friends, but, teens may be using drugs or alcohol to escape the harsh realities that they have to live with on a daily basis. Drugs may also be used to relieve symptoms of an undiagnosed emotional or behavioral complication. Depression and drug use is an ongoing problem in today’s society, especially with the recent rising of the heroin epidemic. According to Casa Palmera, as many as 5 million adolescents suffer from clinical depression. Psychiatry.org describes Depression as a “common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act”. Some symptoms of depression are: mood swings, lack of interest in activities, trouble sleeping and even thoughts of suicide and death. However, instead of focusing on fixed traits and dispositions as the primary determinants of behavior, the psychologist examines the person’s understanding and interpretation of themselves and their environment. Hence an individual’s subjective experiences and personal views of the world and of themselves are critical. (Weinberg and Gould 6th ed.) Depression and drug abuse are interrelated because they both can be caused by both situations and personal characteristics. About 31% of Americans in poverty say they have at some point been diagnosed with depression compared with 15.8% of those not in poverty (Brown, 2012). Along with poverty comes trouble with personal upkeep which can lead to bullying which can also to depression. Kids today are very susceptible to cyber bullying with today’s wave of technology; it is bad enough that will be bullied in school it may seem like there’s no escape. This is where the drugs come in. Some people use drugs to escape the harsh realities of the real world and if something like being bullied is a constant occurrence in their everyday life they can turn to drugs to give short lived feeling of euphoria. They’re in their own little world for that short period of time, and once they come down of that high, they’re off looking for their next fix and that’s how the downward spiral
