“Approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 (21.4%) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. For children aged 8–15, the estimate is 13%” (NAMI) Mental disorders are not uncommon, and the amount of adolescents needing medication for a mental disorder is increasing; which makes professionals question whether or not the treatment of these issues are effective long term. “Writing a prescription is relatively quick and easy, although best practice would involve a detailed discussion of the potential benefits and potential harms” (Efron) of the medication, especially long term. Although most patients hope that their psychiatrist is prescribing the medication/treatment that is best for them; physiatrists are really salespeople who over prescribe medication in order to make a profit. “57% of people with mental health problems are being treated solely with medications...in many cases, drug treatments are associated with an increased risk of subsequent relapse, and a more effective treatment might be to combine drug treatment with psychological therapies” (Davey). Doctors are not treating mental illness the best way for the patient.
