The recovery is an intervention that “refers to the extent to which a person with mental health problems, regains or attains a meaningful life with or without their symptoms (Pilgrim, 2009)”. The recovery model gained momentum in the 1980’s when the UK pushed for the change from institutional care towards community care. Recovery model acts to recognize and enable the development of people’s potential, skills and assets. It also uses them as experts on experience rather than being passive users of mental health services. Some examples of how recovery has been used for was those who have been experiencing voices, to take control of the voices rather than to eradicate them (Coleman 1999; Romme and Escher, 1993 cited in Coppock & Dunn 2010). In fitting with promoting service user perspectives and ideology, recovery encompasses user led networks whereas those with mental distress can come together share ideas, history and knowledge with one and other. Coppock and Dunn (2010) saw that there are four essential elements of the CPA, which are; a systematic assessment of health and social care needs, an agreed care plan, a named care coordinator and ongoing review of needs and evaluation of care plan (six monthly). You might be offered CPA if you are diagnosed as having a severe mental disorder. It is usual for community mental health teams, recovery teams and early intervention teams to use CPA. Under CPA, a person will have a named care coordinator which could be an occupational therapist or a social worker. This person can offer support with medication, therapy, help with money problems and many more things which can be added to someone’s care plan.
Bio-psycho-social model
Another model is the Bio-Psychosocial model of mental health. This is a way of looking at all three models and using them in conjunction with one another to make positive strides in helping someone’s mental distress. It may use medication to help stabilise a person, but it also has the social side of it where it looks at the injustice around the person, such as education or monetary problems. Then as well as the other models it will look at psychological help where it will help build self-esteem and social skills.
