In the article by Hari, he talks about a rat experiment to show that, “the rats with good lives didn't like the drugged water,” and most of them avoided it. On the other hand, “the rats who were alone and unhappy became heavy users.” Likewise, the majority of people who turn to drugs most likely have troubled life and are looking for a way to fill the void, and to avoid social dislocation like Hari’s article portrays. This can also be demonstrated in a study Archives of General Psychiatry that is talked about in the article Contributing Factors of Drug Abuse. The study looked at genetic twins who were raised in completely different homes and environments.
