A task-based leader is someone who can be successful in either favorable or unfavorable situations because their only focus is finishing the task and are not concerned whether or not they are respected or liked by the team. Alternatively, Relationship oriented leaders only work well in favorable conditions because their priority is to ensure a positive relationship between them and the team. Lastly, there are three elements that are pivotal to whether or not a situation is favorable or unfavorable. Relations between the follower and the leader, power, which is related to whether or not the followers have respect for the leader and finally whether or not the followers like how the task is structured, which is the task structure element. He would have been very unsuccessful at bringing the team to success because he wasn’t able to work in the unfavorable conditions outlined in the movie according to the model. His over powering desire to care deeply for the team was his biggest downfall in the movie in order for him to be successful at leading the team. Yoast’s biggest focus of relationship building was his coddling of the black teammates every time that Boone gave them trouble. He was very focused on making that side of the team like and respect him and at one point Boone even had to have a conversation with Yoast about him negatively affecting the black team members with his excessive coddling. Additionally, Yoast adjusted his desires at the beginning of the movie when Boone took his job and was planning to quit coaching for a year. Yoast gave up what he wanted in order to benefit not only the team but to keep everyone happy and respecting him. That is why he is a relationship oriented leader as opposed to a task oriented leader.
