Managers need to cultivate certain skills to be effective and sports teams are not different. Take for example this 58 seconds short scene, (based on a true story), where Coach Boone introduces himself in an aggressive manner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=megNGAc9_i8

It isn’t until we watch the rest of the movie that we begin to understand the reason for his initial approach. Imagine an African American hired to run an integrated team during a time of racial tension. He established clear roles and expectations from the start. For those who don’t know, Herman Boone is one of the most successful high school football coaches in sports. He led the T. C. 513). I can understand why his style was necessary for the problems Alexandria faced in 1971; that approach needed to be aggressive from the start. Personally, after learning about the challenges the leadership and team members had to overcome I would change the title of the movie to be, “A Culture Will Form.” The only choice they had was whether or not the culture they were going to create was one that would help the team achieve its objectives, or whether their inherited prejudices were going to prevent them from doing so.

All leadership has to deal with a whole variety of individuals so they need some level of flexibility in the way they interact with others. And by flexibility I mean there will be times they need to be understanding and even show a great deal of empathy for certain conditions of their players, while other times they need to be tough and call the shots, especially when giving feedback or directing their team. So, I’m not so sure Coach Boone’s approach would do too well in today’s corporate
