The 90-minute battle was between UAH Chargers and the UWA Tigers, and after the third goal was scored, everyone knew who the victor was.

The fans in the stands were in uproar when the final whistle was blown, which meant the UWA Tigers have succeeded at winning their first Gulf South Conference.

But what no one knew was this was the beginning of something astonishing.

“Our first title is special, we created history.” This has been UWA’s first GSC win for the Men’s soccer program ever.

Speaking on the win, Thorne said “it was great beating a local rival UAH in the semi finals and then stepping up in the final and winning convincingly really showed the character we had in the team.”

“UWA was a perfect place to start a new program and look to create history.” And without a doubt, history would be made.

With an overall record of 55-37-6, Thorne knows what it takes to be a winner. The major key is persistence. “Every coach will get their chance, just always give 100% and be willing to learn and take your opportunity when it presents itself”

And with every opportunity, Thorne and his team pounced to capitalize every chance they had to be the best.

“I have had inspiration from numerous coaches and peers, and for me, it's taking a little bit from everyone I look up to and molding it into your coaching style.”

Role models such as Paschal Dunne, the Head Coach at Saint Joseph College, showed Coach Thorne that patience and defensive organization is key.

Coach Thorne knows every player has that champion inside them, “but it's our job, as a coach, to try maximize their output and to dig deep to become a champion and set the winning mentality. “
