Importance Of Exemplary Followership

Highly effective relationships can occur through appropriately matching leadership and followership styles. Leaders seek to uncover hidden potential in followers and assist them in their growth to achieving success (Thornton, 2013). In addition, organizational productivity can be increased by accurately coupling leaders and followers. Laissez-fair leaders can be paired with exemplary followers because they tend to do well under little supervision. Exemplary followers are self-motivated to complete given tasks. This pairing requires low levels of relationship- and – task oriented behaviors (Bjugstad et. al, 2006). Additionally, command and control leaders would work best with the conformist follower. In a field where strict adhereance to processes is expected, exemplary followers are needed to challenge the norms. Their critcal thinking abilities are needed to develop new and innovative ways of leaning processes and removing wasteful actions (Gibbons, 2013). In addition, their ability to act on their on initiative prevents organizations from becoming stagnent. In a organization bound by controls and measures, exemplary followers identify improvements and correct them without having the need to be directed. Proactive followers are important to quality management because they possess the abilities to identify problems affecting the organization. This is important to quality management because the focus is on enhancing the organizations efficiency through lean processes. Addtionally, these followers are very analytical and have the ability to see where processes may go wrong in the future (Reed, 2015). Similar to the exemplary follower, the effective follower is important because of their critical thinking and abilities to make decisions. Without effective followership, processes may fall victim to erroneous implementation. Their organization understanding enables processes to be refined properly (Yung & Tsai, 2013). These leaders set high expectations and inspire employees to meet them. Additionally, this leader encourages higher employee productivity while striving to do things better (Gibbons, 2013). Similar to transformational leadership, the lean leadership style influences employee productivity. Lean leaders are important because they develop employees through teaching quality philosophies. They give employees the tools necessary to identify processes that do not support the organizations goal of superior quality. Additionally, lean leaders support and empower employees, which grows trusting relationships in the organization (Poksinska, Swartling, & Drotz, 2013). The effective leadership style is important because it brings consistency to an organization. These types of leaders are responsive to the organizational needs. Additionally, they develop strategies for achieving the organizations vision and energize employees towards goal completion (Nwabueze, 2011). Lastly, transactional leadership is important because it motivates employee compliance. For those that are not intrinsically motivated, transactional leadership can motivate employees extrinsically with the use of rewards.
