The Link Between Transformational and Servant Leadership
To lead, or not to lead - To serve, or not to serve? These are the questions that vex the mindset of a leader and a servant. Van Dierendonck, Stam Boerma, Windt, and Alkema (2013) emphasized the considerable overlap between servant leadership and transformational leadership styles. Servant and transformational leadership are more influential than transactional or laissez-faire leadership styles. The focal point of this paper is how two type of leadership styles such as servant and transformational, can share similarities in their characteristics, but also differ in the components and proceedings; but gain the same results. Each style is a progressive process in nature that transforms the lives of people. One of the similarities that servant and transformational leadership style possesses is the characteristic of mentorship. To be a mentor, the servant and transformational leader must demonstrate strong communication and listening skills, in order to articulate the vision and the mission of the organization, and to receive feedback from the followers; exemplify empathy to gain a better understanding of the feelings, and cultural perspectives of the followers; and motivate and empower followers to conceptualize how they are a vital part of the organization. Through this development of mentorship, the servant and transformational leader display a high level of commitment to the growth of their constituents; and in turn, followers support the leader through their productivity. In spite of the fact that the servant leader is a facilitator for supporters to accomplish a common vision; the transformational leader moves followers to share a vision (Smith, Montagno, Kuzmenko, 2004).
