Essay About Community Service

Throughout my time in high school and seeing all of the graduation requirements that come and go not once has community service come up. I personally think it is a great idea. Helps us high school students give back to the community. How many people come to sporting events, support clubs, and donate their time and resources to the high school out of the kindness of their hearts? A lot, especially in a small community like ours. The other thing is I think that the term community service is always followed by the question, “what did you get in trouble for?” which is very sad. We have many parks in our little community and many of which really need maintenance. Fences need repaired, explicit words and sayings need to come off playground equipment, multiple other things. This wouldn’t be that hard of a job to do really. We talk to the …show more content…
Incorporating community service into graduation requirements is a great way to give back to the community. Our community gives so much to our high school and helps us so much it’s the least we could do. Look at sporting events and clubs, some community members just show up to help they don’t have a relative in the activity. Helping put something on for kids is not a problem with the help of our community. They need to be reminded that community service isn’t just because we got arrested but because we would really like to give back and in a way say thank you to those that are always helping the high

In the source, The Community Is Their Textbook: Maryland's Experiment with Mandatory Service for Students, by Suzanne Goldsmith, the question of whether or not community service should be required for graduation is examined. Some raise the concern of it politicizes students, as community service can include protests, petition, making signs, etc. For example, students have positioned for a city to paint notices on storm drains, to prevent people from dumping garbage into them. Although a good cause many are concerned about how far it will go. Another argument, specifically made by a student who is filling a lawsuit in protest of the new requirement, says required community service takes the heart and the fun out of community service, to which…

Community service is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I myself had an internal groan when I heard that community service was required and would be set as a grade. I had only known volunteerism as doing a dull boring task with no discernible reward. But after experiencing it for myself I found it quite the contrary. Volunteering is a way to meet new people and witness a group working toward a greater cause.…

Before attending high school, my elementary school teachers would talk about civic engagement, and their descriptions lead me to believe that participating in community service would be boring and burdensome. I remember my teachers saying things like,” In high school you’re going to have to do community service in order to graduate. Such as volunteer at an elderly home, or an animal shelter.” Prior to actually completing a service project, I only had an unappealing image of community service in mind. However, once I got to high school, I grew to love community service as well as learn the importance of…

It didn’t take long for me to realize that high school simply wasn’t the right environment for me because everything they told me I wasn’t capable of, I thrived in at the college!
