A successful person is more than just a good student. I believe that this is the meaning of National Honor Society. In order to be successful I must possess dedication towards scholarship, leadership, character, and service. This dedication not only will be beneficial in my high school career, but also for the rest of my life. One of my teachers once said that everything we do today affects the rest of our lives. This means that my dedication of today will produce my success of tomorrow.

I dedicate myself to being a leader every single day. As sophomore class president, it is my job to represent my class by being the best person and leader that I can be. This is currently helping me because it encourages me to work hard, avoid trouble in all forms, and feel both accomplished and recognized, all of which help to make me a better high school student. Leadership is beneficial beyond high school and college. The abilities I am acquiring from practicing leadership will make me better at my job. Leadership positions in high school give me experience in working with others, which is an ability that is crucial in almost every workplace. Service, while it does benefit me, is meant to help those around me. Service is valuable in high school because it teaches me the importance to aid others in every way that I can. Service also provides a happiness that I will carry throughout my life until the day I die. The joy on a child's face at a spring carnival when they finally win a prize, or when they look in the mirror at the creation you painted upon their face benefit my soul. The smiles on the faces of people who wander chilly New Albany streets when they hear your carols ring out around them helps to make me realize the importance of community. These services not only brought joy to those around me but provided me with memories that will bring joy to me for the rest of my life. Experiences like this have opened my eyes to the lives of others and the importances of being a kind and gracious person that is willing to provide joy to others. That's the key to service, it isn’t about how much you volunteer. Service is about the people you help. Whether it be a moment of joy, or a donation to improve their life, the importance of service is what you

I define success as achieving the goals that I have set for myself whether they are academic or personal goals. I set many goals for myself everyday that I work towards, and then when I achieve one goal I create another goal. My primary goal for going to school is to earn my bachelor's degree in animal science with an emphasis in dairy goats, so I can make our world a better place to live by promoting dairy goat farming especially in my community. True success is being the best I can be, as a person and in whatever I do. Once I have achieved true success I should be able to help others to achieve at least the same level of success if not greater.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
