Being able to observe and understand things from a sociological viewpoint is important because if you can’t understand interactions that are the base of sociology. When I think about my personal weaknesses I would say that my biggest weakness is making time for everyone who is important to me. I always feel like I’m being pulled in different directions and having to balance my time among family and friends. It’s hard to make enough time to catch up with everyone and still stay up on my schoolwork and work or go to the gym and stay in shape. I think that the ability to write well is my weakest sociological skill. In high school I only had to write a few pages in English class, which I had very little feedback. I am currently in research methods and that will give me a lot of skill in gathering information and conducting research. I had social stats so once I have the data I can use it in SPSS which is a commonly occurring skill that is listed in sociology. Some of the skills listed I already have, such as ability to think critically. Another important skill that I developed with groups in class and through sports is ability to work with people in different environments and in situations where group cohesion is needed. There are a few aspects of a career in sociology that I find very important. I think the most important thing that I want in my career is the variability of work, which means to me that I won’t find myself bored with my work. Secondly I want a job that I can comfortably live and provide for me and loved ones. The social service occupation category is the most common career path for sociology majors, and also it’s very interesting to me.
