I have always considered myself a Lady of leadership. I take careful consideration into the examples I set for those who may look up to me as role models. I hold myself to a higher standard so that my children, my students and anyone I am fortunate enough to cross paths with can view me as a standard to be followed. However, this has not always been the case.
My path to leadership was not a straight one. It was filled with many curves, bumps and hard turns. To understand the type of leader I consider myself first I must explain who I am. I am a strong black woman. I am a mother, a teacher, a friend and a mentor. These are tasks I do not take lightly. I understand that my mistakes may not only affect me but also those who look up to be for guidance and direction.
A great leader is one who excels and understands the importance of followers. A leader is only as great as the people he/she leads. While some leaders are born, others are trained. While following in the footsteps of past leaders, one may learn not only the skills necessary to be a good leader but also learn from the mistakes and experiences of these same leaders. My leadership techniques stems not only from role models that I have been blessed to cross paths with but has also evolved based on my unique personality and individuality. These are the tightly woven fibers that make me who I am.
