Personal Narrative: I Found Myself In My Leadership Roles

Decent Essays
I have found myself to be in various leadership roles throughout my life. I was class president for three years in high school. I was captain of the Varsity Tennis team my senior year of high school. In college I founded the first Bollywood dance team at the University of Vermont and was President until I graduated in May 2015. With each role I have learned different skills but the most important being that a good leader must listen without judgment. A team is a team and it functions best when everyone is on the same page, the decisions made must be in the best interest of everyone. I have found that it is not always easy to be in a leadership role. It is challenging role which teaches you to face situations with innovative and creative thinking.

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

One time I assumed leadership was when I was a leader at Higher Ground. Higher Ground is a leadership building camp in the mountains of Colorado. Campers spend a week in the mountains doing extreme actives such as rock climbing, water rafting, and high ropes courses. I was a camper at first then they invited me back a second year to be a leader. My responsibilities were that I made sure all first time campers got the most out of every activity.…

When I was in the first grade, I was considered a goody two-shoes because I followed all the rules and got good grades, but I never really believed that I deserved the nickname until one day on the playground. My friends and I decided to play Follow the Leader. As we continued to play the game, we started to sing all of the songs we had learned in class. I began to wonder, are we allowed to sing outside during recess?…

One of my leadership experiences would be mentoring young people to set a goal in life. Setting a goal to the young people I mentor, benefited themselves. These young people were in eighth grade and I taught them that in high school, you need to have a goal in their lives because they needed to look forward to something. The best part about mentoring these eighth graders were seeing their face expressions. Another leadership experience was leading my volleyball team to the championship round on our first year.…

Leadership, service, and character are three important qualities that help a person better themselves, help others, and realize that one small act can make a difference in a person’s life. In my life, especially as a teenager, I have always tried my best to be a positive influence on others through my attitude and actions. Even in times, when I am put in difficult situations I try to remain positive and find the calmest, best solution. Showing leadership, doing for others, and being a positive influence are all qualities and actions I strive to achieve in my life, if not every day.…

My group session experience as a group member and leader/co-leader has taught me to be more reserved and pull back from my usual leadership role. The group sessions have taught me to be a better listener by building trust with other group members through the commonalities we share. Throughout the group work, we developed the four stages of the group: initial stage, transition stage, working stage, and final stage. The professor was the facilitator for the first few group sessions and I eventually had the opportunity to be the co-leader after observing my professor.…

The leadership role is a position that has many pro and cons. The main concept about being a leader is to have the knowledge and ability to lead groups in the direction, where the groups desire to go. It is difficult at times to maintain the wants and needs of each member in the groups. There are some members that will disagree with methods that some leaders use. It is understandable that not every member in groups will agree with how the leaders are leading their groups.…

The Freshman year of my High School was full of surprises. From new school to new people with even larger background then what I was used to was unexpected. Our High school, Emmet Jr. Conrad high School, was probably the diverse high school in the city of Dallas. During the first few week of the High school I was introduced to many organizations that the school offered such as band, choir, orchestra, theater art, etc… the most interesting one of them was the club called Rising leaders. It taught leadership skill to the student through multiple volunteer opportunities around Dallas and allowed them to learn, lead and hone their leadership skills.…

My first goal as a leader is let followers keep the passion for the work, even if sometimes we may meet difficulties. I think passion is the very important factor of the plan, it will along with all of us for the whole work process. The most significant effect is that passion can determine the attitude of everyone for the work. For example, passion can make us have a good condition at the beginning of every day’s work. Most of the people must feel that they are more energetic at morning than at afternoon.…

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche states,“Without music life would be a mistake” This statement holds very true for me. I didn’t have many friends in elementary school, and I was bullied. Music has given me a sense of purpose and connection. When I was younger it was usually pretty hard for me to talk to other people. For me music was an easily accessible language that I knew that I could use to communicate with other people.…

At the risk of sounding conceited, I naturally usually assume some leadership role in the various aspects of my life. As an eighteen year old I was a substitute teacher my freshman year of college. At nineteen I was the night shift manager for Chick-fil-A after only being there for three months. The same was evident in our group, in the sense I took an informal leadership role. Everyone contributed, but at times I felt I did have to lead the discussion, or try to get ideas out of people.…

Leadership Journey Leadership is quality best found in followers. This may be inherently oxymoronic, but as the best leaders are the ones that know how to follow, comes to light only when people are given the chance to display what they can do. Followers are not just mindless cogs within a machine, rather they are intelligent humans interpreting what leaders tell them to do and leading themselves to create a more positive outlook for the entire team. This causes them to be self-reflective of their own activities and characteristics, a trait that any good leader should posses. This paper does not serve as a morale booster, nor is it a simply a list of what makes me a leader among peers; this paper serves as a framework on which I will build…

For as long as I can remember weight has played a significant role in my life. As a child, I was cute and chubby, so no one treated me differently than any other kid. All I saw throughout my childhood was my family, who are all on the heavier side, so being heavier was never a bother. I saw being larger than normal as an asset because I could boss other kids around. Having always been taller than my friends, I would make fun of them for not growing like I did.…
