30 teams, each containing four participants, were randomly assigned to a condition of virtuality (i.e., instant messaging or video conferencing). Participants then completed a computer simulation task in which social loafing, collective orientation of the team, and team performance were measured.

The dependent variable is social loafing and independent is collective orientation of a team.

To test Hypothesis a regression was conducted with age included as a control variable due to its significant relationship with performance. The results indicated that social loafing negatively predicted team performance (β = -.35, F(2, 26) = 5.92, p<.05). It was found that social loafing does have impact on cohesiveness.

This study brings out the broad outline of social loafing, its antecedents and their impact on group cohesiveness and productivity.

The topic of social loafing was chosen for this research, as it is a phenomenon that is affecting organizations worldwide. Social loafing has to be clearly understood in order to tackle issues that affect group cohesiveness and productivity among IT professionals.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

To Study the impact of Social Loafing on Group Cohesiveness and Productivity among IT professionals

I. To Study the relationship of Social Loafing on group cohesiveness & productivity
II. To find factors contributing to Social Loafing
III. To identify factors leading to and factors disturbing group cohesiveness
IV. To find the relationship of Social Loafing on Group Cohesiveness
V. To find the relationship of Social loafing on Productivity

HYPOTHESIS:

Based on the review of literature and factors considered above, the researcher has come to the formation of the following Hypothesis.

Hypothesis 1:

Social loafing negatively impacts Group Cohesiveness among IT Professionals.
