The book ties several aspects of Human Resource Management together. The first link to HRM is building emotional bridges and being positive is tied to employee relations. Dessler explains, “Employee relations is the activity that involves establishing and maintaining the positive employee-employer relationships that contribute to satisfactory productivity, motivation, morale, discipline, and to maintaining a positive, productive, and cohesive work environment.” (Dessler, 2014) Furthermore, employee relations is key to HRM. A human resource manager job is to manage the human assets. The second link to a strong HRM is performance appraisal. Dessler describes a performance appraisal, “Evaluating an employee’s current and/or past performance relative to his or her performance standards.” (Dessler, 2014) The HRM is responsible to make sure management provides the employees with performance appraisal by the timeline the company indicates. Most businesses give performance appraisal annually that is tied to the raises. The last link to strong HRM is training and career path is related to career management. Dessler describes career management as, “The process for enabling employees to better understand and develop their career skills and interests, and to use these skills and interests more effectively.” (Dessler, 2014) Additionally, proper career management is key to retain talent within a business.
