Arrived at 6:45 and left at 8:30: 13 hours On February 5th Amannie and I had the craziest day we have had this semester thus far. We immediately got our assignment with 5 patients 2 who were suppose to be discharged. I already knew having this workload it would be a pretty hectic day. We quickly teamed up and got report from 4 different nurses this morning. We had a new diagnosed man (K.M.) with AML who needed to get a bone marrow biopsy, x-ray, blood work, respiratory testing, and 2 IVs started to prepare for the initiation of chemotherapy. Another patient (J.K.) had stage IV oral cancer with a j-tube who was NPO, needed blood work, a new IV for 2 units of blood, respiratory testing, and rectal swab. We had a 36 year old woman (A.A) with a past history of breast cancer who had a thoracentesis and a paracentesis (3.5 L) due to third spacing the night before …show more content…
Another one of our patients( J.A.) was suppose to go home and just needed pain medication. Lastly, our fifth patient (L.T) was also suppose to go home after we took her off the PCA pump and gave oral pain medications. Ammanie and I had to prioritize our care carefully to make sure our day flowed. I myself performed and documented every assessment on every patient as soon as possible. We checked on every patient initially and did our basic assessments. After we checked on everyone, we went to give medications to J.K knowing he would take some time to get situated. I got to administer medications through a j-tube which doesn’t happen too often. I learned to not over use flushing with water because it will make the patient bloat more. I will make sure to remember this once I become a nurse. I made sure I used the 6 rights of medication administration which includes the right

These patients had several medications for their chronic conditions such as diabetes, CHF, COPD, and hypertension. This lead me to administer several medications throughout these shifts. In addition, I performed several blood glucose checks, skin care treatment, and performed all assessments and charting for all six patients, and performed change of shift report on five patients. In relation to advocacy I had to advocate for almost every one of my patients in different ways. One patient needed an additional medication to control his heart rate, one patient had some cultural preferences she wanted to include, and another family who was not happy with their care on a previous unit.…

    1. The first primary duty for the nurse was to get organized before patients began arriving at the clinic. She began this by preparing the face sheets for the doctor; this sheet includes the reasons for the previous visit and pertinent patient information (Allergies, name, etc.). This is the sheet the doctor reviews prior to going into the room and then it is used to write his notes on while in each patient’s room. The nurse did this for every patient on the list of appointments for the day.…

Prior to going into the room my nurse asked me to make sure I walked every single IV line and tube to make sure there were no kinks or obstructions. I began to do what she asked but I was a little overwhelmed from the amount of lines on the IV pole. Some lines were not running so I asked her if I could declutter the pole and we did this together. I realized that keeping an organized pole makes a world of a difference when it comes to assessing each line. Caring for my patient was not as overwhelming to me as I expected, what was overwhelming was the amount of charting that needs to be done.…

If you have talked to a registered nurse (RN) about their satisfaction with their job most of them have the same complaint. Their workload is too much and they do not have enough time to care for their patients as they would like. With shortages of RNs and companies looking to save money by hiring more licensed vocational nurses (LVN) or unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP), many RNs are getting overwhelmed. It is essential that RNs learn how to use the resources available to them. The art of effectively delegating tasks to other healthcare staff provide better care for the patient.…

Unfortunately, as humans we all make mistakes, and in the medical field one small mistake can put a resident’s life at risk. On my first day alone I misread a meal ticket and accidently gave a resident thicken liquids. Luckily, before the resident drank the water the nurse informed me to carefully read the care plans and she took the water away. However, once in a long while I will hear of improper care provided at Augustana or see it at other off units. Improper care ranges from small details to obvious mistakes, which both can make an enormous different in a person life.…

I made sure I gave the medications to the patient who needed them the most first. I also prioritized when it came to patient care.
