This week I was assigned to be in the ICU. To say that I expected to be busy is an understatement. I knew to expect critically ill patients and to see them at their worse with different types of lines and tubes coming out of their bodies. The fragile state in which these patients find themselves was hard for me to see, it was actually a bit overwhelming the first day. The second day was slightly easier, at first. Being able to focus care on one patient is a must in the ICU but it also helps create a close relationship with the patient and their family members. The rapport established between a patient and the ICU nurse is a unique one. I can now understand why many ICU nurses’ have a strong protective approach towards their patient’s.

Prior to going into the room my nurse asked me to make sure I walked every single IV line and tube to make sure there were no kinks or obstructions. I began to do what she asked but I was a little overwhelmed from the amount of lines on the IV pole. Some lines were not running so I asked her if I could declutter the pole and we did this together. I realized that keeping an organized pole makes a world of a difference when it comes to assessing each line. Caring for my patient was not as overwhelming to me as I expected, what was overwhelming was the amount of charting that needs to be done. I was constantly going back and forth, turning my patient, emptying his ostomy bag and
