The title of my first reading response was “Trying to Find Joy in Reading.” I believe this was an appropriate title to describe how I walked into this class, and still in some ways how I’m walking out of it. My attitudes have changed slightly after taking this class, but I’m still not someone who would probably sit down and read a book in my free time. However, there were glimmers of hope for me throughout the semester that might indicate I’m heading in the right direction as far as being able to find joy in the reading process. I’m more of an active and outdoors type of person, than someone who enjoys reading. I didn’t try to hide it in my first response, writing, “I generally have a bad feeling towards reading.” This feeling never really bothered me either. I’m fine being a non-reader. Most of the time my reading comes from required assignments. However, what I’ve learned this semester is perhaps I should be more bothered by what I could be missing out on by not actively engaging literature. Throughout the semester, there were readings, and reading processes, that surprised me. Often, we would read something over and over, and the way the story developed or changed everytime surprised me. It’s not that I didn’t understand that it might take more than one reading to understand a piece of literature, I just vastly underestimated how much difference there could be. It wasn’t unusual for me to have a zero-read the first time, and then be able to understand the poem critically…
