In this day and age technology has become an important part of everyday life. In 2015 over 86% of people between the ages of 18 and 29 owned smart phones (Anderson). Even though the world now revolves around cell phones and other mobile devices that does not mean that face to face interaction is unnecessary. Something as simple as sending a text message can crumble the opportunity to strike up a conversation with someone. It may seem harmless until that becomes the only way people know how to communicate with one another. Technology is destroying social skills in children and young adults. Not only can technology destroy social skills but it can also destroy relationships.

According to Kaveri Subrahmanyam, a psychologist, many children who play or watch violent media tend to have irritable personalities. These kind of children lash out at their parents or guardians and are prone to have anger problems. Pediatricians recommend that children only use devices for one hour each day. “Children aged five to 16 spend an average of six and a half hours a day in front of a screen compared with around three hours in 1995”(Wakefield). These forms of technology may seem completely innocent but can corrupt a child 's mind. Many children may become lonely and depressed from using the internet. A study was executed to determine if children really did have feelings of loneliness and depression because of the internet. They found that children who used the internet for long periods of time had an increased feeling of depression. They also were not as drawn to using the internet as other non depressed children would be. “Results suggest that using the Internet in itself caused the declines in social well-being” (Subrahmanyam). Many teaches now use online programs to aid in their lessons and to help appeal to visual learners. This makes learning easier and more interactive for students. Children that are homeschooled can simply take online classes instead of relying on their parents to teach them. Technology can also be useful for long distance communication. Family or friends that live long distances away are easy to get a hold of using cell phones, computers, pagers, ect.. In life threatening situations these devices can be very useful as well. With smart phones the user has full access to a full map of every country in the world. This can be very helpful when in need of directions or current location.
