Such a lack of free time is supposedly caused by the society, as the school demands to many hours from their free time, and parents often have too many expectations. More specifically, Boyd believes that the society puts too much pressure on children, structuring too many of their activities, demanding them an excessive amount of time for education, and creating a culture of high expectations: “it’s not the inherently addictive substance that fretting parents like to imagine. It simply provides an outlet”. Hence, it is possible that many young people spend a lot of time with screen technology because the technology helps them relieve a bit from pressure and connect with peers. As a potential solution to the problem of excessive use of screen technology, Boyd proposes that children should be given more free time by reducing the amount of tests and homework. Among common problems physical and psychological problems that can derive from excessive use of electronic devices it’s worth mentioning sleepiness, narrow blood vessels, and neck and back pain. China, for instance, already considers screen addiction as a clinical disorder, and it has even established rehabilitation centers in which youths are completely isolated from their media. In America, addiction to technological devices has also becomes a serious problem, but it has not been fully acknowledged. As Jane Brody nicely points out in her article, screen addiction often starts “with preverbal toddlers handed their parents’ cellphones and tables to entertain themselves”. The same article points out to a research study that found out that the average 8-to-10-year-old spends around 8 hours a day with the media, while teenagers spend even more than 11 hours a day disorders (Brody, “ Screen Addiction is Taking a Toll on Children).
