Imagine a cluster of people in a room, especially teenagers, that are hanging out with one another. Instead of the enjoying each others company they are all on their phones and essentially disregarding each others company. “Social media is an amazing tool, but it’s really the face-to-face interaction that makes a long-term impact.” remarked Felicia Day. Technology allows people to have many opportunities to communicate with one another, but the quality of that communication is generally poor. As a result of the rise of technological advancements, technology limits social interaction because it is convenient, very time consuming, and it makes doing things easier.

Technology enables us to connect to a group and receive affirmation from the group which causes personal satisfaction. We connect to each other, but we are losing our conversation; these connections do not replace conversations and are only a form of sharing information. I am guilty of cutting conversation and replacing it with texts; when I receive a call, and I am not in the mood to talk, I just push the button “sorry I cannot talk right now” and send a text. The tone of voice reveals feelings such as sadness, excitement, and happiness, but a text conceals them. With technology, we can cover who we really are and fit in a group that accepts us; therefore, we feel we are not “lonely” (Turkle,…

It is true that “Today’s children and teens [are] raised with an excess of new entertainment and educational technology“ (Rosen 376) and that “These young people are among the first to grow up with an expectation of continuous connection” (Turkle 239) but is that really all there is to it? Turkle, who was at a conference at the time, illustrates, “Outside, in the hallways, the people milling around me were looking past me to virtual others. They were on their laptops and their phones... There but not there” (236). She speaks about how baffled she is that these complete strangers would rather text those they love than to speak to her or others in the room.…

Recent technology was created with the idea of bringing people closer together, so why do so many people insist that it hurts our friendship? In spite of it being the twenty first century, a time when technology is becoming more and more apparent in our lives, some individuals seem to think that utilizing technology is killing relationships. In “Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?” By Lauren Tarshis, “Is Facebook Making You Mean?” by Lauren Tarshis, “Generations: Technology Keeps Us Connected” by Carrie Steinweg, and “Don’t Fear the Network: The Internet Is Changing the Way We Communicate for the Better” by Seth Masket, the authors talk about how the internet is shaping our lives.…

Society today is much the same. Technology rules the lives of many, taking precedence over most face to face contact and interaction. Talking at the dinner table, around a fire, even just sitting and catching up with family and or friends has fallen victim to the villain that is technology. Adults, especially the younger ones, just emerging from the social media craze, are just as active on their phones; they, as a result, are also having less…

The interactions with others, behaviour, and personal health, all have been affected because of the distractedness of social media. In the journal article Distracted by Raymond Gozzi, he mentions why teens use electronic devices: “They use electronic contracts to avoid face-to-face interactions. It is easier to text someone a short message, and get texts back, than to actually talk to them” (Gozzi 111). Through the use of social media, people can pick and choose what they want to involve themselves in, whether it be conversations, events, etc. By avoiding face-to-face interactions, they begin to lack the social skills necessary in life.…
