In the year 1932, on the 4th of July, Frida had a miscarriage at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Frida painted herself after the miscarriage, lying back on the bed in the hospital, which turned into this terrifying self-portrait. The woman in the portrait is naked, the sheets under her stained with her blood, and a huge tear drops from her left eye. The bed drifts in an intangible space, encircled by six different images, which act as metaphors relating to the miscarriage. These are secured by umbilical cords and she holds all of them tightly in her fist, never wanting to let go.…
Mercy General Hospital (MGH) is considering altering the recipes for two of the egg entrées served to patients at breakfast. They would like to replace the eggs with egg substitute in the breakfast bake and veggie omelet, in order to make the entrées compliant for a heart healthy diet. This idea is in response to complaints from patients that the heart healthy breakfast menu is too repetitive. MGH has a Heart and Vascular Center, therefore they consistently have a high amount of patients who are on a heart healthy diet, and would like to accommodate their preferences. The breakfast bake and veggie omelet are each served once a week on the regular and consistent carbohydrate diets, but patients on a heart healthy diet receive scrambled eggs every day of the week.…
My final day at the Wallace Thompson hospital was a great and memorialized day . I was able to interact and see with different procedures , and even look at some of the procedures I already seen, but with different patients so different outcomes was definitely a factor. I saw a possible gastrointestinal lymphoma , which was odd for myself considering the fact that I thought lymphoma was only considering the lymph nodes. I was also able to see an I&D of the perineal and groin area. That had to be the most disgusting yet intriguing to me.…
Front Street Hospital: Uninsured Charges and Collections (pg. 237 of Cases in Healthcare Finance, 5th edition) It is quite clear from the text’s exposition on the policy, billing, and collection habits of certain not-for-profit hospitals that serious injustices were being committed against uninsured patients. These injustices were primarily financial in nature – although physical and psychological trauma almost always followed – and they reveal the systematic nature of the abuse. By setting “rack rates” – an extremely expensive set rate for medical procedures – as the ‘standard fare’ for all patients, while simultaneously granting clear and enormous discounts for those insured through third-party entities, the not-for-profit hospitals unconscionably…
County: Life, Death and Politics at Chicago’s Public Hospital by a Chicago based physician and health activist David A. Ansell is a very inspirational book because it covers 30 years of Cook County Hospital’s history, beginning in the late 1970s till 2002. Cook County Hospital is an urban public hospital in Chicago that admits patients who are uninsured. Time, space, communication, and identity are portrayed throughout the book. These four factors are important in inter-ethnic relationships between patients and health care providers. Being able to identify these factors in a clinical setting, health care providers can provide more efficient care for all patients.…

Caring for a cerebrovascular accident in Augusta Georgia. Augusta is known for its many hospitals, so well-known that when I was younger there was talk of changing Augusta’s nickname from the garden city of the south to the hospital city of the south. This did not happen, however the area does have four major hospitals, and two major military facilities. The large number of medical facilities with varying means of funding allows people to receive care to find quality care regardless of their insurance and finical status.…
Doctor’s Hospital is an acute care facility in a small town. Due to a major financial disruption they had to transform their organization’s governing structure. As a result, they did not consider the impact of CIO in IT and they turn CIO’s full-time job into a part-time job. Therefore, Doctor’s Hospital faces many information system challenges. Along with that hospital is undergoing 3 phase construction.…
Jane Addams, Daniel Burnham, and Richard J. Daley all had been affected by the city of Chicago. Jane Addams was more focused on individual neighborhoods, while Burnham and Daley were focused on the city as a whole. However, both Burnham and Daley seemed to compromise and favor certain areas of the city. For Burnham, the downtown area and lake front is where he focused his designs, and Daley always favored his home, Bridgeport.…
For the project, Arlette and I decided to go to North Shore Medical Center on Friday September 30th 2016 at 5:00 pm. The elevators in the hospital setting were very calm and quiet, but visitors and health professionals were going up and down nonstop. While breaking the norm, the number of observers were about one to five each ride and the specific age group were around 45 years old and most of them were Hispanics or African-Americans. My behavior while breaking this norm actually shocked me because I am not a shy person but during this project facing the victims in the elevator made me very uncomfortable.…
