Nutrients determine the amount of calories in food, for example a gram of carbohydrates contain four calories, which is equivalent to a gram of protein. Therefore human needs to control and limit their intake of calories due to the risk of not using all the energy stored in food which results in the excess consumed becoming stored as fat.

Consuming excess calories will most certainly has an impact on the human body due to the risk of becoming overweight/obese causing possible life threatening disorders such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and general poor health. [yourdictionery.com.2015].

The majority of people obtain all the necessary nutrients required by eating a varied healthy diet. However there a groups of people that need extra resources, for example pregnant women are advised by health professionals to increase their intake of Folic Acid Supplements. Extra Folic Acid will reduce the risk of a woman having a baby with birth defects such as Spina Bifida. A woman with an increased BMI of 30 will be offered larger quantities of Folic Acid for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy to reduce the risk of tubal defects.

A person maintaining a nutritional balance is quite simply having a healthy diet. They are consuming the recommended daily allowance of calories and micronutrients.
